Have You Checked Your Oil Lately?
The motor oil in your car serves several important purposes: it helps prevent corrosion, cools the engine by carrying heat away from its moving components, and, most critically, provides lubrication to reduce wear and tear on these parts.
In the past, it was recommended to check your oil every time you filled up with petrol. While this is no longer necessary, it’s still important to inspect the oil level and its condition every four to five weeks as part of a regular maintenance routine.
How to check your oil:
- Let the car cool down: Allow your vehicle to sit for about an hour after driving. This gives the oil time to settle so you can get an accurate reading.
- Locate the oil dipstick: Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual to find the dipstick.
- Initial dipstick check: Pull out the dipstick, but don’t worry about the oil level just yet – this won’t be an accurate reading.
- Clean the dipstick: Wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth, then reinsert it fully into its tube.
- Check the oil level: Pull the dipstick out again. This time, examine the markings on it. These indicate the Maximum and Minimum levels for oil. If the oil level is below the Minimum mark, you’ll need to add more oil.
If your oil frequently runs low and requires topping up, this could signal an issue with your car. It’s a good idea to discuss this with a professional – Home or Away Mechanical Services is here to help.
Inspect the oil’s colour:
The appearance of your oil can also reveal valuable information:
- Clean oil is a clear, golden colour.
- Dirty, black or dark brown oil suggests it may be time for an oil change.
- Milky or foamy oil can indicate a serious issue. If you notice this, contact a mechanic or consult the team at Home or Away Mechanical Services straight away.
